Major initiatives taken by KVK for promoting technologies
(A) Seed production at KVK instructional farm:
In view of farmer’s interest and requirement of the farmers, seed production programme has been taken up especially cluster bean, green gram, sesame, wheat, cumin, isabgoal and fenugreek, as they are main crops in this region by KVK since long years back and it continue up to reporting period. Sizable quantity of seed produced so far (Table-2) and distributed among the farm community on cost basis, beside this, also supplied other Government and non Government agencies on their demand basis. Ultimately it helps in replacement of local seed through improved seed of the crops and farmers earned significantly higher yield from the same piece of land. Therefore KVK much popular among the farming community not only in Jalor but in adjoining districts also.
(B) Introduction of short duration and less water required variety of field crops:
Looking to the scarcity of water, KVK introduced short duration and less water required cultivars of oil seed, pulses and seed spices crops in this district through training and demonstration.
(C) Introduction of HYVs
Castor, tomato and chilly are the important crops of the area. In the early years of KVK, farmers were using traditional varieties of crops. All these verities were having poor yield potential. They were not much aware of the availability of the improved seed and production potentials. KVK had successfully introduced new varieties and convinced farmers to adopt HYVs of different crops through training and demonstration.
(D) Popularization of water saving irrigation devices especially sprinkler and drip in orchards
(E) Introduction of improved varieties of arid fruits like Pomegranate, Ber, Lime, Lasoda and date palm.
(F) Popularization of protected cultivation of vegetables in poly houses.
KVK played significant role to popularize the protected cultivation technology among the farmers by organizing training programmes, seminars and exposures tours. Kendra is also actively involved in capacity building of district extension functionaries .Presently eleven poly houses are establishing in adjoining area of KVK in the district with the financial assistance of department of Agriculture, Jalor and these are technically supported by the KVK scientists.
(G) Mitigating the labour problem in especially weeding in standing crops,
Mitigating the labour problem in especially weeding in standing crops, KVK Jalore introduced and popularized mechanical weed control through tractor by adopting wider spacing (60 cm) in Kharif crops especially green gram moth been cluster bean and sesame.
(H) KVK popularized castor cultivation in the district as major oilseed crop
KVK popularized castor cultivation in the district as major oilseed crop, presently more than 50,000 hectare area covered through hybrid castor. Significant work done by KVK scientist on castor cultivation and findings readily adopted by farmer’s viz. (1) pre-emergence application of Alachlor @ 2.0kg/ha followed by one hoeing and weeding at 40days after sowing. (2) Intercropping of castor +guar in 1:2 ratio is more remunerative than the sole cultivation of castor. (3) Application of Trizophos 40EC @ 1.5liter /ha at the time of whitefly infestation in castor provides its effective control.
(I) Diversification of Agriculture through Horticulture
Looking to the uncertainty of monsoon and depleting of the water level, farmers are advocated shifting from traditional cereal crops to horticulture. In this context, KVK established sizable number of orchards of pomegranate, ber etc. at farmers field through drip irrigation which gives the farmers economic sustainability. It has increased the production and income of farmers.
(J) IPM in vegetables and Pulses
Brinjal, tomato, chilly, and bottle guard are now the major vegetables crops in Jalor district. The pest and diseases causes severe damage to these crops due to favorable weather condition. KVK had popularized the following eco friendly techniques for pest and diseases management in vegetables and pulses.
*Use of sex pheromone trap for fruit borer, pod borer and fruit fly.
*Use of yellow sticky traps for management of sucking pest.
*Use of bio pesticides viz., Trichoderma virdie, Tricho xp, pseudomonas for wilt disease management.
*Use of recommended pesticides with recommended dose for pest management.
(K) Introduction of HYVs of perennial Grass
Green fodder availability round the year, one of the major constraints in draught prone area, had affected the health of livestock and milk production in Jalor district. Hence, majority of cattle owners fed their cattle with coarse roughages. Concentrated mixture feed available in the market are highly expensive and beyond the reach of resource poor farmers.KVK had introduced perennial multicut fodder grass (Napier hybrid) having profuse till ring, non lodging, high crude protein, and less content of oxalate. During preceding years as many as 35 hectares of land of 2998 farmers had been brought under these varities, which gave green fodder through year.
(L) Creation of Job opportunity
KVK organized sizable numbers of long duration of vocational trainings on preservation and value addition of fruits, vegetables, Nursery management, Plant propagation and Ladies-Tailor under Rajasthan Mission on Livelihood Programme (RMol) and RSLDC, Jaipur. Majority of trainees started their own business and they are earnings hand some amounts for their own livelihood, most of them are still touch with KVK scientists for further new inventions.
